We are often asked about the effects bariatric surgery can have on patients who suffer from diabetes and from discussions at our meetings, it is quite apparent that after surgery, many of our members on related oral medication say they are placed on a much smaller dosage or instructed to stop all medication completely.
But what about those on insulin, how are they affected and what advise is there for maintaining critical blood sugar levels during their time on the pre-op diet?
To throw some light on this rather grey area, we are delighted to have Dr Akrem Elmalti, a diabetic consultant at Scunthorpe General Hospital, together with clinical nurse, Claire Briggs as our guest speakers at the next Scunthorpe Group Meeting to hopefully provide some clarification.
After a presentation by Dr Elmalti, there will be an opportunity to ask questions so please come along to what we know will be a most interesting evening.
For details of how to get to the Scunthorpe Group Meeting and further information, click on the link in the Owlss Events Schedule towards the bottom of the right-hand column.
Both Rachel and I look forward to seeing you all.

Think again!
I am often asked by members whether there is a requirement to disclose the fact that they have had weight loss surgery when purchasing travel insurance before a holiday abroad.
This is a rather grey area which I will attempt here to give some guidance on.
Firstly, whilst I accept that cost is a big consideration when buying travel insurance, it should not necessarily be the deciding factor. It is far more important to ensure you are adequately covered should anything go wrong whilst away. This is particularly important for our members who have had weight loss surgery, especially during the first year when everything is just settling down, the surgery area is healing and you are still experimenting with what foods you can eat.

Are you waiting to have a gastric band fitted?
Newspapers, magazines and websites like to illustrate articles by showcasing personal stories. Allergan (the makers of LAP-BAND gastric bands) are looking to raise awareness of the benefits of weight loss surgery and would like to speak to you if you have a story to share.

At the March 2010 Group Meeting held in Scunthorpe, our guest speaker was Sue Bird, from HealthTrainer, an NHS initiative that reaches out to people who are in circumstances that put them at a greater risk of poor health.
Sue gave an informative presentation to the group on the many services on offer and how members could get involved. Whilst Sue is based locally, she did explain that the HealthTrainer service is being rolled out across England and that since it was set up in 2006, around 1200 Health Trainers have been appointed.
Health Trainers work with clients on a one-to-one basis to assess their health and lifestyle risks. They help with behaviour change, providing motivation and practical support to individuals in their local communities.
Where you live in the country can make a difference to how long you live. Each HealthTrainer service has been locally designed and developed to help improve the health of local people.
